TWO men have been arrested after a lorry ploughed into a car shutting the main road into the port of Dover for more than eight hours.

The A2 remained closed in both directions until about 8.45am today following the head on crash late on Sunday night.

Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to release casualties, but details of their conditions have not yet been released by emergency services.

The left hand drive lorry is believed to belong to Romanian firm Eliton Trans.

Motorists heading to the port were told to use the M25 or M20 as an investigation was launched.

Two men, aged 36 and 51, have since been arrested.

Kent Police said: "At 11.54pm on Sunday 2 July 2017 police were called to a report of a collision on the A2 Jubilee Way, in Dover involving a yellow lorry and a black Nissan QashQai.

"The lorry was travelling down Jubilee Way towards the docks and was in a head-on collision with the car which was travelling in the opposite direction.

"The road was closed for a number of hours and the collision is being investigated by the Serious Collision Investigation Unit."

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 01622 798538.
